Filming, editing...running interviews...creating!

Saturday, March 5th. 2011.

So after eight weeks of work, our young filmakers have a much clearer idea of how to go from putting ideas together to filming and producing their own videos. They have all started individual projects, a process that has included brainstorming, writing, filming, directing, editing...and of course, having lots of fun. An important element of this project is to motivate participants to freely choose the themes of their videos and apply the fundamentals of video production to get their ideas across.  They are all doing a great job! !Felicidades chavos! Su trabajo es buenísimo y están logrando crear videos muy buenos!

Filming with the bigger camera!

Students certainly learned a lot from editing. We did this with some random images taken from their flip cameras...they chose the clips, added transitions, text and music...they played with slow motions effects, sound and image editing...They can now see potential there is for creating films that can communicate different feelings and emotions...we are now excited to see them stepping to a more creative stage in the video workshop.

Learning to edit: our students´ first videos

On Saturday we introduced the students to the editing process.  Most students had already begun filming and some were almost finished recording their footage.  At the beginning of class, students presented to each other the main idea for their stories, the main message they wanted to communicate.  While most students were clear on their storyline, some were finding it difficult to answer the question, "what is your purpose for telling this story?"

But once they began editing, worlds of possibility opened, and new ideas were born.

Exploring Identity Through Film-Making

A project by Ollin Tlahtoalli: Centro de Lenguas y Cultura Mexicana a.c.
Santo Tomás Jalieza, Oaxaca.
Oaxaca, Mexico

In this workshop we provide young Oaxacan students the theoretical and practical tools to create their own films. Students engage in dialogues around community and identity, explore those cultural and personal elements that define them as members of an indigenous community.

Students make their story boards, learn basic film language and start capturing images of community members, family and places they belong to. In the process, students have the opportunity to share their personal stories and those of the community. This group of teenagers will eventually produce short videos to tell their community and the world about who they are and about those elements that define them as young members of an indigenous community. These videos are Identity Texts (Cummins, 2007) which will help us understand their lives and the complexities that surround indigenous communities in Mexico.
